Master class
We were commissioned to take a shot at a classic school assignment
Class of the Titans, The Collage Project
Joe Marianek (senior designer at Pentagram, teacher at SVA), Ellen Lupton (writer, designer, director of the graphic design MFA program at MICA and Strange Attractors Design, (teachers at the Design Academy Eindhoven, The Royal Academy of Art and Parsons, The New School for Design) took their best shot at a few classic school assignments.
We were given an assignment by Ed Fella. “The project description asked students to take two articles from published sources and fuse them together into a flat, text-and-image composition on a single piece of paper with X-acto knives and glue sticks, then create a photostat to get the collage onto one surface. The goal of the assignment was to rearrange the visuals to make political or social messages that were not apparent in the original material. For this project, we took our material from newspapers and magazines published in the last week of 2009, when one seemingly ordinary individual with explosives and a detonation syringe forced airports and governments to reconsider their screening procedures. It was another seemingly ordinary person—not a U.S. air marshal or undercover informant and armed only with swift instinct—who thwarted the attempted airplane bombing above the skies of Detroit on Christmas Day. How did we get to this point? What inspires such hatred in a young and privileged 23-year-old student that he would want to take the lives of 200 alongside his own? Our collages considers the simultaneous shades of truth and narrative qualities in visual media.”
