Collaboration with
poet Tsead Bruinja

We teamed up with Tsead Bruinja to create digital poetry

We received a grant from The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) to team up with Frysian poet Tsead Bruinja and create a screen based piece of work for the Digital Poetry Event ‘Poëzie op het scherm’ 2008. We developed a tool which allows the user to explore various interpretations of Tsead Bruinja's poetry. Recordings of Mr. Bruinja reciting his poems were first separated into phrases and then compiled as an inventory of spoken word in 3 tongues: Frysian, Dutch and English. The written poetry, which was also carefully cataloged, complimented the verbal poetry by creating a visual representation of the aural texture and cadence.

“A poem in 3 languages with an equal amount of voices yet an unlimited number of experiences. Part play, part narrative, this 'Pulp Culture experience’ triggers abstract behavior of verbal forms allowing the user to create different interpretations of the text. Depending on the usage, www.onderhandelingen.com could be a multi vocal monologue or dialogue. Random sequencing and a firm dialogue between sound and typography enable the user to experience the manuscript of Tsead Bruinja in new ways over and over again:
“Lit de ûnderhannelings begjinne!”
“Laat de onderhandelingen beginnen!”
“Let the negotiations commence!”
(A wordplay by Frysian Tsead Bruinja, American Ryan Pescatore Frisk and Dutch Catelijne van Middelkoop)”
