Students of the Man and Communication Department develop Wayfinding Concepts
“At the end of 2010 EYE Film Institute approached Design Academy Eindhoven with an intriguing challenge. Would the department of Man and Communication be interested in devising concepts for a wayfinding system for their new home? After a preview of the blueprints, it was an invitation that could not be refused. The new bespoke building for the Dutch centre for film culture and heritage is quite simply spectacular. The wedge covered with white shiny tiles evokes a spacecraft that has crash-landed on the bend of the river ‘IJ’. Designed by the Vienna office of Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, it’s a highly dense structure composed of accentuating angles that suggest the beamed projections of inner auditoria. Daylight glitters and reflects all over the multi faceted surface, creating optical effects that change with the times of day. This wonderful sculpture of a building is Amsterdam’s first true icon of the 21st century – and an instant landmark.” (The Stone Twins)
Strange Attractors designed and edited a publication featuring all initial explorations and final Wayfinding concepts for the EYE Film Institute by students from the Man and Communication Department of the Design Academy in Eindhoven. The booklet provides insight into the design process as well as the teaching methodology of the department. To highlight the complexity of the building which our students had to work with, we designed a grid entirely based on the architecture of the building. Since the architect had requested that the final wayfinding system had to be executed in black on the white pristine walls, we incorporated this limitation into the design to make a distinction between the design process of the students and the actual implementation of the final design.
